Asbestos tileshave to be removed from the buildings, in addition to many other corrections.Lack of accessibility, lack of egress in case of a fire or other emergency, inadequate ventilation, antiquated electrical systems, failure of the building envelope and inadequate hoods over kitchen stoves are some other issues with the present structures.

According to Farnsworth architect Scott Burge, issues such as inadequate ventilation can be corrected if the district is ready to spend the money. However, certain issues such as accessibility at Wataga could not be corrected.

“The three buildings will take a little less than $3 million to repair to bring them up to modern school standards,” Burge said.The board’s finance committee will meet before the next board meeting on March 15 and discuss the matter.Asbestos is common problem associated with almost all old buildings because, prior to 1980s, it was a widely-used construction material.
